Voting and Judging
Two hundred (200) Finalists will be selected in The Open online contest. There are two ways you can become a Finalist:
100 Finalists are chosen by the public. Creative industry pros, media, other photographers and photo lovers from around the world click the heart to Like your images. The more Likes you receive, the more your images move to the front of the site, and the more people see your work.
The Open closes for submissions on August 15, 2014, but remains open for public voting through August 22, 2014. The twenty (20) images that receive highest accumulated votes in each of the 5 categories will comprise the list of 100 publicly-chosen Finalists.
JUDGES VOTE (Round One)
Separate from the public voting process, a panel of the sharpest eyes in the business will be pouring through all submissions. The Open's judging team will individually select their top 20 images in each of the five categories. The 20 images that receive the highest number of combined votes in each category will comprise the list of 100 judged Finalists. Any ties will go to a second ballot. The judges will not be aware of the photographers who became Finalists through public voting.
FINAL JUDGES VOTE (Round Two)
The 200 SOLO competition Finalists will advance to a new panel of esteemed photographic experts for final judging. To maintain impartiality, all images will be presented to the panel anonymously. Round Two judges will not be informed whether the finalist was advanced by public or judged vote. Round Two judges will vote by electronic closed ballot to determine the Category winners and Photographer of the Year. Judges may individually request access to "About the Photo" information associated with a photograph to assist in their assessment.

THE OPEN is a worldwide search for the most inspiring photographers of our generation. It is an exposure powerhouse that connects photographers with a global audience. Photographers always retain 100% copyright control of their images.
THE OPEN was honoured to receive a very rare 'A' rating from PhotoShelter in 2013 and 2014, rising above National Geographic, PDN, Communication Arts and many more. It has been distinguished as “the most networked photo competition in the world” for its groundbreaking use of social media to give artists a global audience.
True to its name, THE OPEN welcomes all photographers. It is a search across six continents with a simple mission: discover the undiscovered; rediscover the established; bring the best photographers to the forefront.
Here’s how it works: all images are displayed in real time on THE OPEN’s gallery. Half of the 200 finalists are chosen by a judging panel comprised of some of the sharpest eyes in the photography business; the other half are chosen by open online voting fueled by the major social media platforms. From there, all finalist images are presented anonymously to a second panel of judges for a sealed-ballot vote for the category winners and Photographer of the Year.
THE OPEN is designed from the ground up to generate widespread exposure and business-building opportunities for photographers. It reaches photo lovers in 176 countries. It connects directly with 50,000+ creative industry professionals in North America, Europe, Latin America and Australia – art directors, photo editors, publishers and ad agencies – who tap into THE OPEN to discover new talent.
